"Bully Proof" is a three hour youth work shop designed to teach basic life skills on dealing with schoolyard violence and bullying, emphasizing how not to look like a victim
and reporting the behaviour. Basically, its assertiveness training for kids.
The program covers two areas of defence.
Mental
Self-Defence and
Physical Self-Defence
Mental self-defence is the emphasis of this course. How Not To Look Like an
Easy Target. Here we teach kids about body language, how to stand, talk and act prior to and during an incident.
Some topics include:
Awkward reactions of the targets.
Body language skills
How to control reactions.
Ignoring Bullies.
Being serious.
Using humour to deflect the situation.
How to stand.
Giving the evil eye.
Understanding the bully.
How and what to say.
What not say.
A huge amount of importance is placed on reporting the bullying behaviour (and the proper way to report) to parents and teachers and how they can help. |
The physical self-defence training focuses mainly on how to escape from the bullies grasp and get away. We do not teach kids how to punch or fight. Most bullies out weigh their victims by 30 to 40 pounds so standing up and fighting is
never a good idea. 90% of any self-defence situation is mental self-defence so
that's our focus.
Depending on time constraints I teach some of the skills below:
How to escape from a bear hug.
How to escape from a wrist grab.
How to escape from the ground
How to escape being pinned
How to escape from a choke, both on the ground and standing up, with one hand or with two hands around your throat.
How to escape from being escorted outside.
There are other techniques as well.
The kids usually have a lot of fun with these techniques and they are only done with time remaining. |
Workshops are usually held at
Mount Saint Vincent University and fill up fast. I am also available to do seminars outside the Mount for groups of kids to a maximum of
30.
The workshop is designed for 8 years old but often younger kids attend with
parents.
For boys and girls (believe it or not girl bullies are crueller than boys).
It's important that parents attend with their child as there is an enormous
amount of information for parents too!
